Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification

The National Assembly for Wales’ Children, Young People and Education Committee want to hear your thoughts about - and experiences of - the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification (Welsh Bacc)* and whether you find it a useful qualification for those you employ.

Our inquiry is considering the extent to which the Welsh Bacc is understood and valued by employers and the extent to which it is considered to be an equivalent, rigorous qualification. We are also interested in the benefits and disadvantages of the Welsh Bacc to employers.

We’d like to know:

  • Do you consider the Welsh Bacc when employing new recruits?
  • If so, do you view the Skills Challenge Certificate (SCC) component as being equivalent to other qualifications (for example, do you view the Advanced SCC as being the equivalent to an A level, or the National/Foundation SCC, as being the equivalent to a GCSE)?
  • In your view are there any advantages or disadvantages for students who have studied the Welsh Bacc?
  • Welsh Bacc students are expected to gain skills such as Communication, Numeracy, Digital Literacy, Planning and Organisation, Creativity and Innovation, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, and Personal Effectiveness. Do you notice a difference in the skills of those who have studied the Welsh Bacc when you are recruiting? If so, it would be helpful to know the level of Welsh Bacc you are referring to (National, Foundation or Advanced).

Your views will help us scrutinise the Welsh Government, and make recommendations for actions that should be taken to improve the learning options available to Welsh students.

Please leave your thoughts and ideas below, and please comment and rate the experiences and ideas other people have made.

You do not have to identify where you work if you would prefer to remain anonymous, but it would be helpful if you could indicate which industry you work in eg. construction, finance, retail, healthcare.

If you have any queries, please e-mail sally.jones11@assembly.wales
