Voting at 16 and political education

We need to improve our political education in order to reduce the age for voting to 16. I am completely in favour of this move but it has to come with more awareness of how the World works built into our education. We are growing up in a World where we are surrounded by fake news and lies. How can we know what’s real and what’s not if we aren’t educated to help us make sense of things? I think this will have a much bigger impact on us at all ages as we grow up too.

There could be separate lessons or it could be part of our History lessons using past experiences to show us how things work or other subjects where there is some crossover. It would be great if visits to the Senedd could be part of our education so we can see how things work in real life not just reading about it in books. Bringing things to life is a really great way to learn.

Why the contribution is important

This is important because there are lots of young people of all ages who can and can’t vote who have no idea what it’s all about. How can we make a real decision if we don’t know what the question we are being asked actually is? Just reading about things is not always the best way to learn it’s much better to back it up with real life examples. Having politicians from all parties come into schools to talk about their politics, visiting the Senedd, maybe even Westminster would really bring a better understanding to everyone. It’s inportant we know we can make a difference and we have a voice.
