Life skills subject in schools

A compulsory subject should be added to school timetables that teaches basic life skills in finance, paying taxes taking out loans etc, and basic politics.

Why the contribution is important

Many young people finish school without any idea on how they should buy a house, pay their taxes save their money. In terms of politics they aren’t as educated on the issues at hand and won’t be able to properly consider what they will vote and could vote for the wrong thing.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us @Thomas! You mention that 'basic politics' should be a compulsory subject on the school timetable. Do you have a view on what kind of themes or topics should be covered as part of a 'basic politics' subject?

‘Basic politics’ would include a general overview of the climate in British politics. These would cover things like the various parties and their aims/manifestos, the various political institutions (devolved governments), and major events or issues in politics today (including the UK’s position and role in global politics). All of this would be a general overview and just enough for younger people to have a better understanding of the political understanding and so that they can come to their own decision and have their own position after understanding the various issues. This would have to be done before being able to allow 16 year olds to have the vote so that they don’t vote on certain things for the sake of it or because their friends and family will because it’s the cool thing to do.
