Improve engagement skills with farmers

I talk to farmers. About starting to think about changing land uses from food production to other public goods that haven't yet come up on their radar.

The phrase 'talked to' is wrong. I've held conversations with hill farmers in village and town halls in the Brecon Beacons around a subject that deserves more nuance in how farmers themselves should be a part of rather 'than talked to about' http://www.countryfile.com/explore-countryside/wildlife/what-do-farmers-think-rewilding.

This stuff isn't in books. It's not in a Welsh Govt procurement manual. It's a skilled nucanced social science issue we avoid at our peril.

I suggest that the WG looks more closely at why it had to relauch Glastir three times, finds it hard to get around NFU's 'farm for food security only' mantra, allows some conservation NGOs to lead on the environment without more joint-statement collaboration.

It can be done http://robyorke.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/ECOS.whole_.pdf

Why the contribution is important

This lack of our ability to engage with those that matter is holding back better ways of getting good stuff down without grandstanding from those trying to own the issues. Without trust and collorborative 'bottom-up' ownership by farmers and land managers, it's hard to get better practices to remain sustainable in the long term.

Thank you for sharing your idea and comments!

Your ideas and priorities are now being used to help the Committee write its report on how we can develop principles to underpin a new agriculture and rural development policy for Wales. For more information, please do contact me @ celyn.cooper@assembly.wales. I’ll also make sure to update the pages and this thread to keep you updated as this progresses.
