European Protected Species - Bats, Dormice, etc

How will European protected species be protected post brexit? There are some aspects of their current protection that not all ecologists agree with e.g. the way licencing is run. E.g. you have added a rear extension to your house , 3 droppings and 2 pipistrelles were found.

Of course all developments which may affect bats must still have bat surveys undertaken by licenced ecologists etc, but a proportional approach depending on the reports' findings might be better than a multi-form system...where if timetables slip due to illness or weather this must be notified immediately to NRW / authority etc etc.

Why the contribution is important

Can the bats be protected through current planning legislation - meaning that as a condition of being granted planning consent the appropriate measures for the bats MUST form a part of the development or planning consent will not be granted. Rather than the licencing system which is drawn out, unfriendly, gives bats and ecologists a bad name in many counties and National Parks Authority areas (known to be particularly hard to please).?

Systems can always be improved but what is more important is that a recognised mechanism for protecting vulnerable species always exists and is always used.

Thank you for sharing your idea and comments!

Your ideas and priorities are now being used to help the Committee write its report on how we can develop principles to underpin a new agriculture and rural development policy for Wales. For more information, please do contact me @ celyn.cooper@assembly.wales. I’ll also make sure to update the pages and this thread to keep you updated as this progresses.

Your ideas and priorities have also been a great support for the Committee as it invited representative organisations and bodies to come to the Senedd and give oral evidence on the future of agriculture in Wales.
