Votes if release date falls within the term of the body being elected

Prisoners who are set to be released within the time frame of the term of the elected body should be able to vote. The severity of the crime could also be taken into consideration if needed however I think this should be a blanket rule. If prisoners are to be effected by the policies of the government at the time due to their policies on prisons and rehabilitation etc. then they should be able to vote on this.

Why the contribution is important

This is important because it takes into consideration both the feelings of people concerned about long-serving prisoners being able to vote throughout their sentence. But it also allows for prisoners who are up for release to be involved in the political process and hopefully help them in rehabilitation. It may be best to see if prisoner voting has improved the prospects of successful rehabilitation in other countries too.

Thanks very much for your comments @laura1 - do you think any special considerations should apply to young offenders in custody if the voting age is lowered to 16 and 17 years olds?
