Shared Parental Leave Equal pay

Currently, if both parents work for the same company - and they offer any additional maternity pay as well as SMP i.e. full pay for x amount of weeks only the mother qualifies. If parents share maternity, the father will only qualify for SMP, so the majority of people will be worse off if dad takes shared parental leave. I think a company that is offering any additional maternity pay to a female employee should be offering it to a male one who decides to share the parental leave. We were unable to share parental leave because of this! Also -SMP is less than the minimum wage if you worked full time (like I did) -should be higher

Why the contribution is important

It will increase the amount of dads who share parental leave -my husband wanted to but we couldnt afford to only have my wage and him on SMP -we struggled with his slightly higher wage and my SMP

The potential for maternity and paternity leave to be equalised, shared at the same time if desired, so that both parents can adjust to parenthood together should be explored further.
