County Councillors do not currently have cover whilst on maternity leave. This puts pressure on the individual to return to work before they are ready. Maternity leave should also be noted in apologies for meetings. At present the member will be noted as ‘absent’ with no reason given. This impacts on attendance to meetings record which is available on the council website,

Why the contribution is important

We need to encourage women into politics, especially young women. Council’s need to amend their policies accordingly.

I find this bizarre. Surely it is in everyone’s best interest to cover a councillor’s absence, what a stressful experience to be worrying about constituents when you should be focusing on your new baby. In addition, maternity cover would provide useful experience for those considering taking on the role in future.
